28th Annual Senior Variety Show Was Another Success!

Two appreciative and responsive audiences enjoyed 80 senior performers in “Footloose & Fancy-free; Oh the Places We will See!” on August 23/24 at Ames City Auditorium.   The pre-show consisted of selections by the Heart of Iowa band, setting the tone for vacationing across the USA.  The show, directed by Tim Berry and Ronnie Lindeman, was interspersed with song, dance, comedy, and original readings as the audience traveled from “California to the New York Island” and many places in between!  Doorprizes from Chocolaterie Stam and Cake & Caboodle only added to the spectators’ delight.

The performers ranged in age from 61-94 and represented six different local communities.  Their joy was not only in performing on stage but also creating, rehearsing, and bonding with each other throughout the spring and summer.  Along with the performers, about 70 volunteers donated their time and talents to this community celebration of aging.

Thirty-seven businesses/organizations helped sponsor the show, including Premier Sponsor: Northcrest, and Marquee Sponsors: Ames Ford Lincoln, Green Hills Community, and Shaffer’s  Auto Body.   Community grants from Ames Commission on the Arts and Discover Ames also help cover the show expenses.   Because of this community support, the ticket sales are able to go toward chosen senior projects: Heartland of Story County’s Meals on Wheels Program, The Bridge Home, Good Neighbor Emergency Assistance, American Legion #37’s Wreaths Across America (Story County), and the Heart of Iowa Band.

The cast party reveled in their success at an Afterglow gathering directed by Geri Derner and sponsored by Ames Ford Lincoln with contributions collected by Steve Bellin from Fareway Stores, HyVee, and Chocolaterie Stam.
